Math is like love - a simple idea but it can get complicated.
R. DrabekFoundation and history
The Institute of Mathematics, Physics, and Mechanics (IMFM) was established on April 28, 1960, by the People's Assembly of the People's Republic of Slovenia. On July 5, 1972, the founding rights were transferred to the University of Ljubljana.
In 2003, IMFM received a call from the State Attorney's Office to regularize its registration in the court register in accordance with the provisions of the Decree on the Unification of Entries of the Republic of Slovenia as a Legal Entity in the Court Register and Stock Records (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 43/1998) and to correctly register the Republic of Slovenia as its founder. Based on this call, IMFM submitted such a proposal to the court register, and the District Court in Ljubljana registered the Republic of Slovenia as the founder of IMFM, effective from June 6, 1998. However, at that time, IMFM was not transformed into a public institution.
IMFM was not a budget user and obtained its operating funds mainly by competing in public calls, especially those of the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency (ARIS) for basic, postdoctoral, and applied projects, as well as multi-year research and infrastructure programs and public calls for Target Research Programs co-financed by the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Slovenia. A smaller part of the income came from funds obtained based on contracts with organizations from the economy sector.
On average, about 20 full-time employees and 110 part-time collaborators conduct scientific research work at IMFM. In addition to scientific research, which is the core activity of IMFM, young researchers, future scientists, are also trained at IMFM. The purpose of this training is to obtain a doctoral degree.
At the end of 2014, there was finally progress in aligning the legal status with the actual situation. Based on documents obtained from the University of Ljubljana, IMFM was registered as a public institution (organizational form) by a decision of the District Court in Ljubljana on October 16, 2014, with the name Institute of Mathematics, Physics, and Mechanics; abbreviated name IMFM; with the founder being the Republic of Slovenia.
Since the adoption of the decision on reorganization, IMFM has strived to achieve the necessary alignment of the registration in the court register. IMFM submitted several applications to the ministry responsible for science and to the Government of the Republic of Slovenia to adopt the decision to transform IMFM into a public research institution, but the transformation of the institute did not occur.
The year 2022 represents a milestone for IMFM. After many years of effort, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, at its session on May 10, 2022, adopted the Decision on the Transformation of the Public Institution Institute of Mathematics, Physics, and Mechanics into a Public Research Institution. The decision was published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 67, on May 13, 2022, and came into effect on May 28, 2022.
